I Love New York
The I Love New York slogan is both a logo and also a song. They were created as part of an
advertising campaign to promote tourism in New York City, and then later in New York State. The
popular slogan has been used since the mid-1970's and is still used today.
The logo was created by Milton Glaser and Bobby Zarem. In 1977, the Deputy Commissioner of
the New York State Department of Commerce, William S. Doyle hired advertising agency Wells
Rich Greene to develop a marketing campaign for New York State.
Glaser expected the campaign to last only a couple months but has continued to be extremely
popular today and has become closely associated with New York City. The red heart is such a
commonly recognized symbol, it is used for everything from T-shirts for I Love Argentina to I Love
New Jersey.
In 1977, Steve Karmen composed the song "I Love New York" and it was declared the state song
by Governor Hugh Carey in 1980.
